Elected Officials

The City of Atlantic City has a Mayor-Council form of government.

The Mayor is the leader of the executive branch or the Chief Executive of the City of Atlantic City. The Mayor is elected by the citizens to serve for a term of four (4) years. It is the job of the Mayor to enforce the City Charter. The Mayor appoints Department Heads, with the advice and consent of City Council, who assist in carrying out the mission and vision that the Mayor sets for the City.  The Mayor also appoints members of boards and commissions, makes recommendations to City Council on items of public interest and annually reports on the State of the City.  The Mayor submits the annual budget to City Council and approves (or vetoes) all City Council ordinances.

The City Council is the legislative branch or the governing body of the City of Atlantic City. Members of Council are elected to serve for a term of four (4) years. A total of nine (9) Council members comprise the governing body; one (1) from each of Atlantic City’s six wards and three (3) Council members-at-Large. In accordance with the Code of the City of Atlantic City, under the laws of the State of New Jersey, City Council exercises the legislative power of the municipality for the purpose of holding Council meetings to introduce ordinances and resolutions to regulate City government. In addition, Council members review budgets submitted by the Mayor; provide for an annual audit of the City’s accounts and financial transactions; organize standing committees and hold public hearings to address important issues which impact Atlantic City.

The elected officials would like all citizens of the City to be alert and aware of their surroundings.  To enable you to take appropriate precautions to protect yourself and those in your care from possible harm, public access to New Jersey Sex Offender Registry is available online.  Information in the registry is intended solely for the protection of the public, and should never be used to threaten, intimidate or harass another person.  To access the registry visit the New Jersey Megan's Law Home Page.
